Teaching Assistant (TA) Program

The teaching assistant program provides well-performing graduate students with the academic opportunity to gain experience as educators through tutoring undergraduate students and doing academic assistance work such as experiments, workshops, and hands-on exercises. TAs are compensated for their work, thus easing the financial burden of their schooling and improving their quality of life.

Kumamoto University PhD Work-Scholarship (KWS)

This program is designed to improve the quality of life as an academic researcher at Kumamoto University. KWS employs doctoral program candidates as research assistants (RAs) or teaching assistants (TAs) and provides financial support for this work equivalent to half of their course tuition.
RAs gain skill in conducting research through the academic opportunity to work as support staff in the research projects of other graduate students. RAs are compensated for their work, thus easing the financial burden of their schooling and improving their quality of life. The university benefits as well, by securing more hands and minds to assist with research.

Kumamoto University Doctoral Program Scholarship Program (KDS)

This program is designed to attract excellent doctoral candidates to Kumamoto University and to strengthen the academic research activities of the university. Doctoral program candidates who achieve outstanding grades and academic research results are eligible to receive this scholarship.

Support for Short-Term Study Abroad

Kumamoto University provides a variety of opportunities and financial support for its students and graduate degree candidates to participate in international study programs and research activities, with the goal of increasing an internationally oriented mindset and academic and research skills among the student body. Through 2019, the international scholarship program has supported about 10 students per year in studying abroad.

All students are potentially eligible for tuition exemption.

Support for International Students

Kumamoto University has established the Center for International Education with the goal of contributing to its own internationalization. The center provides education in Japanese language and customs for government-sponsored foreign students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The university also has staffing and programs for facilitating the integration of international students, such as surveying challenges regarding their studies and daily lives, providing support, and providing opportunities for them to participate in research and local community activities.
